Before moving to DC my wife and I made a pact to do one new thing per week to take advantage of all the city offers. So far, we have kept this agreement from going to the National Zoo to listening to jazz in both the Sculpture Garden outside the National Gallery and in Rosslyn. We have kept ourselves busy.
This weekend, after a successful wedding fashion shoot and equally as successful gathering at our apartment in Arlington, we decided to go to Adams Morgan Day an annual festival in Adams Morgan that celebrates the areas diversity and culture.
The city blocked 18th Street from Columbia to Florida Ave as well as Belmont Road. 18th was lined with vendor after vendor and included everything from local crafts, artists, businesses, civic associations, political candidates and parties, bars, restaurants, and even an outdoor dance floor. The diversity of the neighborhood was certainly on display not just in the variety of vendors but in the eclectic mix of food, drinks, and artistic perspectives.
As a photographer, I found it invigorating and exciting to see so many local artists expressing such individual points of view. Being new to the city, I particularly enjoyed seeing the way various artists painted, drew, photographed, and represented their city. Seeing such a wide range of perspectives makes me hopeful in being able to contribute my include my own perspective to the multitude that already exist.
